Statement on Fundamental British Values

Bay House School and Sixth Form is a school which serves its community; staff, pupils and students recognise the multi-cultural, multi faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom and understand and embrace our role in ensuring groups or individuals are treated with mutual respect.

Our school community strives to challenge any form of discrimination or intimidation based on difference, and to ensuring individuals or groups are not open to radicalisation by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them.

Our school is open to all those entitled to an education under British law, including pupils and students of all faiths or none. We actively promote equal opportunities, and do not discriminate against any individual or group based on faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political views or financial status.

The Government emphasises that schools are required to ensure that key 'Fundamental British Values' are taught in all UK schools, setting out its definition of British values in the ‘Prevent Strategy’:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

These values underpin our culture and ethos as a school, and are evident through our curriculum and extra-curricular provision at Bay House.

In addition to our ‘in and beyond curriculum’ provision, these values are both an explicit and implicit feature of:

  • Our assembly programmes that uphold traditional values of empathy, respect and tolerance. Our assemblies are led by teachers, staff and young people and we draw on the expertise of visiting speakers to highlight particular themes
  • Our varied Tutor programme where young people are encouraged to express their opinions, join in debate and current affairs discussions and reflect on their role as members of the school and local communities
  • Our involvement in a wide range of local, national and international activities and events.
